PROFILE OF LIZO PEMBA
Lizo was born at 34 Dubula Street New Brighton in Port Elizabeth. He is a born talented visual artist and got more basic skills on water colour from his father Titus Keke Pemba. He also got influenced by his grandfather the late, Dr George M M Pemba, the well known South African artist.
He started drawing at an early age, drawing pictures from imagination and coping from magazines. At school where he attended was popular known as cartoonist during the political unrest.
Lizo decided to leave South Africa because of pressure from security branches .Ultimately he joined the Umkhonto Wesizwe the Military wing of the A N C and was based in Angola .In the Army Military he joined other artists providing posters and banners in the camp. At a later stage Lizo was deployed at the A N C printing shop in Luanda the capital city of Angola producing graphic art i.e.A N C and S A C P emblems and cartoons for various journals.
Lizo and others ANC artist participated in several art exhibitions and demonstrations. In Angola he was commanded to paint the portrait of SWAPO President Sam Nujoma that was officially presented by the ANC and NEC from Lusaka to the SWAPO NEC.
The ANC sent him to Zimbabwe to study fine art formerly for the first time. In 1991 he came back to his father land and South Africa. In 1992 Lizo registered at the University Of Fort Hare for a four year degree (Bachelor of Arts in fine Arts). And passed painting with distinction under the late Professor Mike Halier
While studying he produced book illustration for the Lovedale Printing Press Publishers and got other art commission around Alice and also from Cape Town.
In 1996 he was employed to the Eastern Cape, Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture to promote Visual Arts and Craft. He has participated in various group exhibiions. He had two Solo exhibitions, the first one it was at High Barry Art Gallery, and then owned by Cathy Binell and the last one in 2009 at the Red Location Museum. In 2005 I had two man exhibitions at African Feeling Gallery; he had more than three TV documentaries, and last one of Johnny Clegg’s Country Imagine.
